A field is read-only in the field app

Who can do thisPermission: settings ≥ 2

Fields the office sets on a job — tenant contact details, the property address, the report title and scope — show read-only in the field app by default; nothing here restricts further than that default, it only grants specific edit access on top of it.

What it is

Capture policy lists each portal-fed case field with its own toggle: leave it locked (the default) and the surveyor sees it read-only, exactly as the office entered it; turn it surveyor-editable and a surveyor may correct it on site for that field going forward. This sits alongside — and layers on top of — the section-visibility rules in App configuration; a field can be visible and still locked.

Before you start

Changing these toggles needs organisation-admin access to Settings.

How to do it

  1. Open Settings → Capture policy.
  2. Find Portal-fed case fields — surveyor override and turn on editing for the specific field that needs it.
  3. Changes apply to every surveyor immediately — there’s no per-device configuration to push out separately.

How it integrates

This sits alongside two other locks worth distinguishing: the date of survey field, which is auto-set and locked by its own separate toggle (for catch-up entry of paper surveys done on a different day), and the date of report, which is never editable by anyone, since it’s stamped automatically the moment a report is sealed. None of these toggles affect who can edit the case at the office end — a manager or coordinator with Work-orders edit access can always correct these fields from the portal; the toggles here only govern the field app.

Common problems

  • A surveyor says they can’t fix an obviously wrong tenant name on site. Check whether that field’s override is switched on under Capture policy — if it’s still locked, correct it from the portal instead, or turn on editing for that field.
  • I turned on editing for a field, but a surveyor already mid-survey still can’t edit it. See A settings change has not reached a survey in progress — a change here applies going forward, not necessarily to a survey already open.
  • I want surveyors to be able to fix the report title but nothing else. Turn on editing for that one field only — each toggle is independent; turning one on doesn’t grant editing on the others.
