The operative's works-jobs experience

An operative’s app is deliberately stripped down to one job: works orders assigned to them, with no survey wizard, no evidence browsing, and no self-report option.

What it is

Signing in as an operative shows My works jobs instead of a surveyor’s job list — a home screen with only Home and Settings in the bottom navigation, no centre “start capture” button, because operatives don’t self-report surveys. Each job shows its progress through scheduled, started, completed and verified, plus, where the job came from a survey rather than being raised directly, a stage rail and a read-only snapshot of the findings to be remediated — the operative’s only view into the source survey, not the full record.

Completing a job needs exactly two things: a GPS fix confirming you’re at the property, and at least one after-photo, timestamped and fingerprinted the same way survey evidence is. No signature or note is required. If a photo is still uploading when you tap complete, the app doesn’t force you to wait — it queues the completion locally and finishes it automatically in the background the moment the upload succeeds, whether that’s seconds later or after you’ve closed the app and reopened it with a signal.

How to do it

  1. Open My works jobs and tap the job you’re on site for.
  2. Review the findings-to-remediate snapshot, where the job has one, or the plain scope-of-works text for a direct works order.
  3. When the work is done, tap Complete job, confirm your GPS fix, and add at least one after-photo.
  4. Submit. If a photo is still uploading, the job shows as Finishing until it completes automatically.

How it integrates

A completion that’s genuinely failed to reach the server — for example, a permission or quota problem rather than a temporary connectivity issue — shows as Needs attention with a clear reason and a retry option, rather than being silently dropped or endlessly retried. A queued completion retries automatically when you get a connection back or reopen the app, with no action needed from you. Once complete, the job feeds the same case-lifecycle verification step described in The case lifecycle end to end.

Common problems

  • I can’t find the survey wizard. Operatives don’t have access to it — your role only works works orders; a coordinator can complete a job on your behalf from the portal if genuinely needed.
  • Complete job is greyed out. You need both a successful GPS fix and at least one photo added before it activates.
  • The job says “Finishing” and hasn’t updated in a while. That’s normal while a photo finishes uploading in the background — it completes automatically; only a “Needs attention” state means something needs your input.
